There are a lot of things you need to do when you are preparing for a move. One of the big decisions you have to make is which moving company you are going to hire to move your belongings. This is an important consideration since you are going to be counting on that company to transport everything you own safely. This is why you want to be sure you ask the right questions.
You want to ask how long the company has been in business. This lets you know you are going with a company with experience and know-how. They may be packing your items and will be loading them. They will also be driving them to your moving destination. You want to trust that things are going to go smoothly and experience will play a huge role in this.
The next question to ask moving companies is for their registration number. Any moving company should have a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration number which is referred to as their USDOT number. Asking this question helps you know they are licensed, bonded and insured.
Make it a point to ask if there are additional fees which may come up. Sometimes there may be additional fees for items which are awkward to move, if the load is going to need to be hand carried for a certain amount of distance or if the location is hard to access. If there are going to be additional charges you want to be aware of them ahead of time.
If you are going to be moving a long distance, then one of the questions to ask moving companies is whether or not there is going to be additional transfers. Some moving companies will transfer your belongings from one truck to another in certain circumstances. If this is going to take place then you want to know this upfront. Excessive handling of items can increase the chances of damage.
Ask moving companies what forms of payment are accepted. You want to be leery of any company that tells you they only accept cash. There is no way to track payments made with cash.
You also want to ask about a guaranteed delivery date. You want to know exactly when you can expect your belongings to arrive at their destination. The company should be able to provide you with an exact date and an approximate time.
